LESS-THAN-TRUCKLOAD TRANSPORT

What is Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) Transport?

Less-than-truckload, also referred to as less-than-load, is a transportation service that fulfills the transport and delivery of relatively smaller loads or quantities of freight that do not occupy the full dimensions of a 48- to 53- ft trailer. LTL is the right choice for your business if you need to move cargo frequently, as it offers economies of scale that help to minimize cost and increase schedule flexibility.

In many scenarios, a company usually will not wait until a wholesale client is down to the very last product to replenish and order inventory which would require a full shipment and thus full truckload of products. More often, LTL transport is utilized to mitigate the loss from a lack of sufficient inventory. Henceforth, LTL affords businesses the opportunity to always have sufficient inventory in stock on a continuous basis.

How are LTL Rates Determined?

Carrier quotes for LTL transport services are based on several factors, including the distance required for transport, the dimension and freight class of the shipment, and additional measures required for handling such as liftgate needs, inside delivery, as well as other loading and unloading criteria. When requesting LTL service, you must determine which rate weight to use based on the weight of your shipment. The freight class system in LTL categorizes freight into four distinct categories: density, ability to be stowed, liability and handling.

The freight’s specific National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) is used to reference the applicable freight class for the shipment. As your weight increases in pounds, it is promoted into a newer weight category that usually has a lower rate calculated per hundredweight (CWT) or per 100 pounds. If your shipment is packaged in pallets, we offer the best competitive pallet rates and pricing based on the number of skid spots needed within the vans.
